Greetings Fellow Eclipse Chasers,
The year 2013 offers an unusual eclipse you won't want to miss -
a rare hybrid solar eclipse on November 03.
A hybrid eclipse is sometimes called an annular/total eclipse
because parts of the central path are annular while others are
total. In most instances, a hybrid eclipse is annular at the
start and end of the central path and total along the middle
section, but the 2013 eclipse is not a typical hybrid. Although
it starts out annular, it quickly changes to total and remains
total throughout the rest of the central path.
So what does this mean to eclipse chasers? The entire eclipse
path through central Africa will be total! The bad news is that
the duration of totality is quite short. Read on to learn why
this is actually a good thing.
The central eclipse track crosses Lake Turkana in northern Kenya
where the Sun will be 12 degrees high during a totality lasting
14.7 seconds. This is very short indeed! The Moon's disk is only
be 0.4 percent larger than the Sun so it's a snug fit. But the
very conditions that make for a short eclipse also mean that the
Sun is surrounded by the ruby-red chromosphere throughout
totality. What an incredible sight it will be. And Baily's beads
promise to put on the most stunning display you've ever seen,
because they will cover nearly half of the Moon's limb at each
contact. With modern digital cameras, it's possible to shoot
rapid sequences that will catch all the action. And HD video was
made for this eclipse.
In addition, Lake Turkana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and
home to Koobi Fora, the "Cradle of Mankind" where important
specimens of fossil man and his ancestors have been discovered.
We'll have the opportunity to meet with an archeologist there
for a presentation on Koobi Fora and the latest fossil finds.
Spears Travel has put together a wonderful itinerary featuring
some of the best safari destinations in Kenya. As different as
Samburu Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Masai Mara
Game Reserve are from each other, they all offer spectacular
views of the flora and fauna of East Africa. I visited each of
them during the 2010 annular eclipse and can't wait to go back.
I hope you can join us on this truly remarkable adventure!
Clear skies,
Fred Espenak (aka Mr. Eclipse)
